The end of a great era in the NBA

Written by Jessica I. Contreras, Staff Writer Within the past year, basketball fans have been continuously devastated by the retirement news from some of the greatest to play the game in the NBA. Kobe Bean Bryant announced his retirement from the league in late 2015, and that just about started the ripple effect within the few remaining greats. Title players from the same era as Bryant–such as Tim Duncan, Kevin Garnett, and Paul Pierce–have also announced their recent retirements. Tim Duncan played with the San Antonio Spurs where he took on the NBA championship and Defensive Player of the Year. He was also named Rookie Player of the Year in 1998 and one of the few to play with the same team for 19 seasons. However, he stayed true to his character throughout his entire career. He was always a humble individual, teammate, and opponent. Happy Kobe Bryant Day!

Written by Liz Charre, President Happy Kobe Bryant Day! To all Laker fans and most importantly Kobe fans: welcome to the first ever annual Kobe Bryant Day. The City of Los Angeles announced on Monday that August 24th will now be known as “Kobe Bryant Day” to honor the black mamba’s success and dedication to the Lakers basketball team. August 24th was chosen to honor his two jerseys: 8 and 24. He started off his career with the Lakers as #8 and later switched to #24. Regardless of which jersey he wore, he remained dominant on the basketball court. Let’s take a flashback. Kobe scored a high of 60 points in his final game. He was also the first player in NBA history to have scored 60 points in his final game with a team. Because of all his amazing accomplishments, Los Angeles will have the opportunity to celebrate, acknowledge, salute, and thank Kobe Bryant for his faithful 20-year commitment to the Lakers organization. Hollywood end in NBA season

Written by Liz Charre, Staff Writer The NBA season closes off with a Hollywood end as of Wednesday, April 13, 2016. First off, the man of the hour Kobe Bryant with 20 seasons with the Lakers, five-time NBA champion, 18 time All-Star, and 15-time member for the All-NBA Team. As the NBA star entered the Staples Center Arena one final time, the crowd went wild chanting “MVP, MVP, MVP.” Kobe, who has not scored more than 35 points this entire season, showed his determination and strived one last time in his Lakers uniform. He broke the record for most points in his last game passing Wilt Chamberlain. To close his final game, he scored 60 points and won the game for the Lakers. What a great way to end an incredible career. Now, Kobe was not the only person breaking records. The Golden State Warriors made history as well winning the most games in a regular season. The Warriors entered Wednesday night with one win away from breaking the 1995-96 Chicago Bulls record of 72 …

Kobe’s farewell

Written by Liz Charre, Staff Writer As the NBA season kicked off about two weeks ago, the Lakers have had a very slow start. They won their first game out of six against the Brooklyn Nets this past Friday night. Sunday was another tough loss as the Lakers faced the New York Knicks and Kobe Bryant’s farewell from Madison Square Gardens. As the slow start continues for the Lakers, could this be Kobe Bryant’s final season? Is Kobe really giving up 19 seasons with the Lakers? “If this is the last time, I’m fine with that and I feel at peace with that,” stated the 5-time NBA champion in regards to Brooklyn fans’ tributes to him. As the Lakers continue their season on the road, they will face Miami on Tuesday and Orlando on Wednesday. Kobe will not start against Miami as by stated Byron Scott. “It was a last minute decision.”
