Giants lose 6-5 to Cubs, eliminated from NLDS

Written by Liz Charre, President All good things come to an end. In this case, the San Francisco Giants lost their opportunity to head into the World Series on Tuesday night at AT&T Park against the Chicago Cubs. They are now eliminated from the National League Division Series. The Giants were three outs away from forcing a decisive game 5. Both teams would have traveled back to Chicago to play the deciding game. Then, the winner would have faced the winning team from the Nationals/Dodger game on Thursday. Unfortunately, the Giants will not be given that opportunity because their bullpen blew it in the ninth inning. Down by three runs, the Cubs managed to score four runs to win Tuesday’s game and move onto their second consecutive National League Championship Series. A stadium filled with cheerful Giants fans came to a silence as the Cubs managed to make the biggest comeback in postseason history. Giants fans were left in disbelief. Even-years have been magical for the Giants since they have won three World Series Championships …

No-hitter for Arrieta

Written by Liz Charre, Staff Writer For the second time in his career, Jake Arrieta threw a no-hitter, shutting out the Cincinnati Reds last night. He is the fourth pitcher in MLB history to be the reigning Cy Young award winner and throwing a no-hitter the following year. The other players that have thrown a no-hitter, a year after they won the Cy Young award, were Sandy Koufax in 1964, Bob Gibson in 1971, and Clayton Kershaw in 2014. Arrieta has had a great start to the 2016 season. His record for this season is 4-0 and since last season, Arrieta’s record is 20-1 with his era being less than one. In his last 24 starts, he threw two no-hitters and has only allowed seven runs in those starts. For hitters, it looks like they are unable to figure out Arrieta’s pitches because he has been solid in last year’s postseason. As the Cubs celebrated their twelfth win on Thursday night, it wasn’t just Arrieta who stole the show. Rookie of the year, Kris Bryant …

Keuchel and Arrieta your 2015 CY Young Award Winners

Written by Liz Charre, Staff Writer With the offseason starting, several trades, awards, and winners have already been announced. However, this past Wednesday was a significant day for baseball starters as the CY Young Awards were announced. CY Young awards are given to the best pitchers in the MLB that have shown dominance throughout the entire season. This year’s CY Young Award winners are Houston Astros’ Dallas Keuchel and Chicago Cubs’ Jake Arrieta. Both of these pitchers showed great leadership, dominance, and strength throughout the 2015 season and postseason. Dallas Keuchel is the third Astros pitcher in franchise history to win the Cy Young award. The last pitcher to win it for the team was Roger Clemens in 2004. As for the Chicago Cubs, Arrieta becomes the fifth pitcher in their organization to take home the Cy Young Award. Given their strong performances throughout the season, there is no doubt that it was a close call, especially for Jake Arrieta.
