Name: Bianca Silva  Graduation Year: 2015 Major: Journalism & New Media with a Minor in Multimedia Communications Current Occupation: Bassrush Contributing Writer and Graduate Student What did you gain/benefit from being a student at Mount Saint Mary’s University? Attending Mount Saint Mary’s University changed my life, simply put. It shaped me into a woman I never believed I’d become, I really found myself during my time there and it’s all thanks to the amazing women I met while I was there. There is a real sense of community at the Mount that’s hard to ignore. Your peers become your support system when you need it most and because of this peer support, I gained confidence, ambition, and strength within myself that I was able to help give to others. To this day, these women continue to support me in so many ways and I am so grateful I can still call them my closest friends. If you could go back, what would you have done differently as an undergraduate student? Although I was super involved …

Finding the right job for me

Alumni of the Mount Name: Jazlin Romero Graduation Year: 2016 Major: Journalism and New Media Minor: Film, Media and Social Justice Current Occupation: Freelance Writer and Social Media Consultant What did you gain/benefit from being a student at Mount Saint Mary’s University? I gained a lot of self-assurance when I was a student at MSMU, I figured out exactly who I was and was able to focus on all the things I really wanted personally and professionally. I expanded my education, which in itself was huge! I felt so lucky to be in college and really recognized the value and beauty of my education. The idea that education has the ability to make an individual think in ways they may have never thought before was empowering. Education is limitless and beautiful because it allows individuals the opportunity to make their journey’s personal to him/herself and chose they will apply that in our society. It was just amazing to me what I, Jazlin, was gaining at that moment in my life. If you could go back, …

Being at the Mount made me realize how powerful I am; I was quiet no more

Name: Ursula Grace Ortiz Rutter Degrees & Graduation Years: A.A. in Liberal Arts May 1988, B.S. in Nursing with a Minor in Psychology May 1989 Current Occupation: Registered Nurse in NICU (Neonatal Intensive Care Unit) What benefits and experiences did you gain from your time at the Mount? Being at the Mount made me realize how powerful I am, as a woman, to be and do what I want. That the sky is the limit, that I had a voice and it mattered and it made a difference in the world. I was quiet no more! How did your liberal arts education support you as a nursing student? My Liberal Arts education supported me as a nursing student by seeing the other part of nursing: the humanity! Nursing wasn’t just about the medicine, the biology, the diagnosis, the treatment, the anatomy, the physiology. It was about the person, their family and loved ones, their beliefs, views, perceptions, wants, needs, feelings, their soul, their experiences, their environment. It helped me to see the human behind the patient. …

I wanted to be free of expectations, so I made it so

Name: Hazel Anne Agustin Graduation Year: 2016 Major: English, Journalism minor What did you gain/benefit from being a student at Mount Saint Mary’s University? Despite the small size, the Mount offered me something larger colleges or universities wouldn’t have: attention. My professors would easily and willingly speak to me if I had any questions regarding the materials. If you could go back, what would you have done differently as an undergraduate student? Double majored in Journalism and New Media. If I wasn’t so eager to graduate with my class of 2016, I would have definitely finished the last few units remaining. That’s pretty much it! What advice would you give to current students at the Mount? If you have a light semester, consider taking an art class of some sort – even if you’re not an Art major. It was probably one of the most out-of-the-blue decisions I made as an English major, but I think it helped relieve the stress I carried during the school year. These classes won’t make you tear your hair …

We should all aim for greatness

Name: Tamara Murga Graduation Year: 2016 Major: Journalism and New Media, minor in Creative Advertising Current Occupation: Freelance journalist/photographer and Los Angeles Magazine Intern What did you gain and benefit from being a student at Mount Saint Mary’s University? Aside from a great education, I definitely gained self-confidence. With all the opportunities available at the Mount, I was able to get out of my comfort zone – extremely important for the career field I chose. If you could go back, what would you have done differently as an undergraduate student? Definitely would have interned more. Many places offering internship opportunities prefer juniors and seniors. I didn’t realize that making that one of my biggest priorities would be so important. What advice would you give to current students at the Mount? Prioritize what is already on your full plate and do not procrastinate. What is one of your favorite memories from the Mount? College is definitely the place where I met some of my best friends. I’ll always cherish how much we pushed each other to …

Don’t let money blind you from doing what you love

Alumni of the Mount Name: Kimberly Quitzon Graduation Year: 2016 Major: Journalism and New Media Current Occupation: Writer, Social Media Coordinator, CBS Page What did you gain/benefit from being a student at Mount Saint Mary’s University? The Mount was where I met the people that would help shape the rest of my life. From friends to professors, it has given me an opportunity to connect with those who not only understand my goals, but push me further into achieving them. I was able to land internships during school and recently was offered a position in CBS’ Page Program thanks to my support system.  If you could go back, what would you have done differently as an undergraduate student? If I could go back I would have taken advantage of more networking events. There are so many speakers that come to the mount who can be potential employers or even mentors and I wish I would have understood that sooner.  What advice would you give to students at the Mount? This time in your life is going to …

Making sacrifices until I get to where I want to be

Alumni of the Mount Name: Cindy Carrillo Graduation Year: 2016 Major: Journalism and New Media Current Occupation: Los Angeles Dodgers Foundation RBI Intern What did you gain/benefit from being a student at Mount Saint Mary’s University? I gained confidence and determination. My first semester was not what I had imagined. I lost one of my books, test scores dropped and I felt like a disappointment to my parents. In a writing class, I met some amazing women who I’m thankfully still friends with, to which I found my purpose. I was excited for school and had a vision. If you could go back, what would you have done differently as an undergraduate student? I would have gotten more involved with clubs on campus and events that were held. What advice would you give to current students at the Mount? Some advice I would give current students is to try and get your classes at the same time, that way time doesn’t feel wasted. It’s draining when there is long gaps between, so plan ahead and try …
