Serena Williams upset at the US Open and loses No. 1 ranking

Written by Liz Charre, President Serena Williams has failed to make the US Open final for the second time consecutively. If last year wasn’t a disappointment, this year was worse. Williams struggled with serves, hit shots, and consistency during the match Thursday night against Karolína Plíšková from Czech Republic.  The worst part of it all was that she lost the match with a double fault in the tie-breaker. Not only did Williams lose her semifinal match in consecutive sets, she also lost the world No. 1 ranking. She was No. 1 in the world for 186 consecutive weeks–tied for the longest streak in WTA history. Many tennis fans had high expectations of Williams. Over the past few months, she has not played her best. However, she did win Wimbledon back in July but lost in the third round of the Olympics. I gained confidence and determination. My first semester was not what I had imagined. I lost one of my books, test scores dropped and I felt like a disappointment to my parents. In a writing class, I met some amazing women who I’m thankfully still friends with, to which I found my purpose. I was excited for school and had a vision. If you could go back, what would you have done differently as an undergraduate student? I would have gotten more involved with clubs on campus and events that were held. What advice would you give to current students at the Mount? Some advice I would give current students is to try and get your classes at the same time, that way time doesn’t feel wasted.
